The ingenious design allows birds to feed as normal, but as soon as anything hefty tries to latch on to the feeder, the weight automatically forces a shroud down, shutting off access to the seed.  The really clever part, is that it allows the smaller birds to feed, and does not harm the Squirrels. All that happens, is the Squirrels get bored with failing, and, within a few days, go and find another place to feed. If you want to prevent large birds from feeding there is a spring that can be adjusted, so pigeons and Magpies etc will not have access to the food either.
