With this hot weather comes many problems for your garden wildlife and there is plenty we can do to try and relieve them of their stressful state.
For your garden birds. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water (changed daily) both in terms of a bird bath and a drinker too if you have one. If you have some grass then there is a good dew early in the morning and the birds will be able to get off to a good start with sips of the dew droplets from the grass and or plants. This dries up around 9 or 10am and from then on they rely on finding water sources, which in towns and cities are few and far between sometimes. So any water you can provide will be used by your garden birds.
There is plenty of natural food around just now, but it all takes energy to collect and fly back to the nest, so if you can put some fresh garden bird food out for them then this too will be of enormous benefit to them.
For your garden wildlife - much of the same as above applies, they need fresh clean water available at all times, but this should be provided in several ways if possible. For the insects and invertebrates, just a wet patch of earth is all they need. so maybe tip the contents of a bucket left overnight in the rain - or just a litre or so from the tap, onto a nice shady patch of earth and keep it moist throughout the day. For the larger garden visitors, they need a range of receptacles, so maybe a shallow dish (no more than 10mm high) for the mice, voles and reptiles, with a bowl for the fox, badger and squirrels etc. Again the most important thing to do is to keep it fresh as often as practical.
We love to see the wildlife in our garden and we do try to help them in the ways mentioned above. We hope you love looking after your garden friends too.
