It is February and we have just had the warmest few days in history, this has had enormous effects on nature and will have ramifications for many months to come.
Just take a walk around your local open space, flowers are blooming that should not be seen until mid march or April, blossom is abundant and bees are attending to the flowers, birds are squabbling for space and partners.
Taking a walk along our lanes in the village yesterday I was stopped by the sound of bees, at first I thought the place must have had a hive the noise was quite incredible, but when I stopped for long enough to listen closely, I realised the tree above me was in full blossom and was absolutely jam packed with bees - there were hundreds of them, all gathering the pollen from the flowers, but this is way too early and now, if we have a cold snap the tree and the bees will be caught out and will have woken up too early.
Likewise with the birds in your garden, they are getting ready for Spring, but if we get snow and freezing temperature then they will be confused and bewildered, and more importantly, will be hungry and soon become weak, so it is now that we can help all of our wildlife in the gardens and beyond by putting out food and fresh water for them to enjoy untill Spring arrives properly.
