Mid January and the Snowdrops are drooping ready to open their lovely flower heads as the first signs of life come to our gardens. Daffodils are on sale in the shops, so it must be warm down south, our Daffs are still only about half way grown and it is concerning that they may get frosted if the cold weather stays with us for long. The Blackbirds are just about thinking they might start building practice nests and seeing if any females are interested in them and the Hedgehogs are tucked up nicely in their homes they will only venture out if it drops below -5° and then they will be looking for warmer homes, so if you see one (and the weather is cold), keep an eye on it for the day and if it looks like it is in trouble (curled up in the middle of open space or wandering round in circles) then find your local Hedgehog sanctuary and seek advice on what to do.
Providing fresh water is essential during cold weather and the product we use is Ice Free it is a natural product that does not harm the birds and will prevent ice forming down to -4°. Feeding suet is best for giving high energy supplements and mixing suet pellets with your bird seed mix is the best way to feed them. Provide some Peanuts for additional oil and fibre and you have all your garden birds require to keep them going for months of cold weather.
