It is that time of year to start thinking about the jobs that need to be done before the bad weather sets in. The picture above was taken in our garden on 28th September, a fine and sunny day and a long way from Winter - yet there are signs of Autumn all around us. The leaves are starting to fall, the flowers are dying back and the birds are eating lots of food again! even the picture tells a story, the Bee is slow and lethargic and the Sunflower is showing nearly all seeds are ready to drop - once the Bees have finished the birds can have a feast.
Time for the hedges to be cut, the lawn to be mowed long, and planting even more bulbs. Tidying up the veg patch, creating compost for next year. In amongst all this action, Hedgehogs are moving around looking for a home and food for the Winter sleep, so we will leave some leaves in a pile near the shed, also we will put some fresh hay in an old drainpipe for the garden wildlife to find and take to their nests and roosts. Make sure the pond (a tiny one) has a stone above the water, close to the edge so any non-amphibious friends can get out if they fall in!
What ever the nature of your garden or local park, you can always find something to do that can benefit the wildlife around you and they really do need our help at this time of year so they can get as fit as possible for the long cold Winter months - give it a try:)
