Our garden has lots of wild flowers and trees, bushes and some areas left to go wild, so in June it is a pleasure to walk around the garden and look and listen to all of the birds activity.
Starting from 4am the dawn chorus marks the start of the busy day ahead for all of the parents feeding their young chicks and fledglings just leaving the nest, So we always make sure we have plenty of fresh water in the form of bird baths and some for drinking as well as may different types of food for the birds to enjoy. But a question often asked of us at this time of year is what to feed the young birds that are coming to the garden bird feeders?
The best way to find out is to try a few different seed mixes, you can't really go wrong, as long as you don't put out whole peanuts or other large seed (as these types can be taken to the chicks in the nest and can cause choking). So chose a mix with small seeds and try to find one with a high energy ingredient, so the adults keep up their strength too.
We have found that the Robin and Tit mix works really well in our garden for both fledglings and adults alike. It contains dried mealworms for high energy and protein as well as granulated peanuts and sunflower hearts for oil and fibre.
