Here in Shropshire, we are not the earliest in the floral calendar, but the same is true for many counties in the UK, so some have not got any flowers yet, but our local Snowdrops and Crocus know it is time for them to pop up and start to colour the garden once more. Daffodils are four inches high and are waiting to see more sun before raising their heads.
Lighter mornings are also announced by a small dawn chorus, yet to build into a wakening crescendo, but a pretty nice way to start the day nonetheless. Lazy, drowsy Wasps are beginning to appear and there are signs of the Robins finding territory and potential mates, as they fight each other over the bird feeder for dominant position.
There is cold weather forecast for this weekend and this is just the sort of thing that can set back nature, from flowers to vegetables, from Spiders to Hedgehogs and from Wasps to birds, they are all starting to warm up and get ready to start their new year, but if the cold snap sets in then that is when there is a danger of lack of food and shelter. Now is a good time to make sure you are stocked up on garden food essentials.
