When we had our little cold snap last week the Hedgehog population naturally thought it was time to find a nice warm house to kip in and settle down for the winter hibernation. BUT, with such a short cold spell, and now above average temperatures for the time of year, the Hedgehogs will awaked from their doze and look to feed again to add weight in preparation for the winter.
So now is a good time to make sure you have some Hedgehog food and water in your garden over night and you may well see a Hedgehog or two having a late feed. Hedgehogs are one of the few mammals in the UK that do actually hibernate, basically they go into a deep sleep and slow their heart rate down to around 20 beats per minute and all bodily functions slow down into a state of Torpor. But they do take a while to get right into their hibernation and as we have only had a few days of cold weather and now it is so mild, they will still be seen about an what's more they are likely to seek out a new home too. So it is not too late to provide a Hedgehog house for them as well as some Hedgehog food and of course fresh water - never bread and milk.
