Choosing the right bird food for your particular garden can be a bit hit and miss, and without doubt, the best thing to do is buy a small amount of several different mixes to try one at a time and see which the birds prefer, as they surely will prefer one of them more than the others and then you will be able to buy in bulk and save money.
At our shop, here in Standford Bridge near Newport Shropshire TF10 8BA.,We are asked most days by customers "which mix do you recommend?" and our answer is always the same - every garden is different and you need to find the best mix for your own garden we have 8 mixes on display and several more for regular customers who phone through and ask us for specific requirements.
As a general rule, avoid mixes that contain Wheat - unless you want to feed Pigeons, Pheasants and carrion birds - the reason is that Wheat has very little nutritional value for the birds and so they will throw it away to get to the more beneficial seeds. Wheat is normally included in a mix to bring the price down and we do sell two mixes with Wheat in them in order to be competitive with some outlets, but we don't recommend it.
A Wheat Free mix is designed to provide wild birds with all of the nutrients they need to survive, you can add suet or Mealworms or what ever else you like to give an energy boost but the base mix ideally does not contain Wheat. If you take our Wheat Free mix, then there are 12 different seeds include din the mix, so there is plenty of choice for the different species and this leads to greater variety of birds in your garden. This is the sign of a good quality mix, not one with lots of one sort of seed or another. Look at the ingredients in our Wheat Free mix and see for yourself.
