There are lots of types of wild bird feeders out there on sale, ranging from £1.50 plastic to £150 steel, some with a guarantee, others bought as sold, there are feeders for wild bird seed, Niger seed, Suet pellets, peanuts and others besides. But one common factor is they all have some kind of perch for the birds to rest on whilst eating the goodies from within. Some bird feeders have steel perches and are indestructible, but others have plastic or brittle metal perches.
So when you have brought your feeder and you are enjoying the wild garden birds eating their wild bird food, it is frustrating when the wind blows your feeding station over, or a Squirrel drops your feeder on to the hard ground, and the perch is snapped off.
There are a couple of solutions I can think of, first one - check the warrantee, if you have bought a lifetime guarantee feeder from Droll Yankees or Jacobi-Jayne (we sell both) then just contact the supplier and tell them what you need replacing and they will send out the parts to you free of charge easy!
Second solution - if your wild bird feeder does not have a warrantee covering damage, then try a cable tie, they are the long plastic things electricians use to hold cable and wires together in a bunch and are available from any DIY shop, just select the cable tie of an appropriate length to wrap around the feeder tube and leave a couple of inches of the cable tie extending away from the feeder - job done, the birds are light enough to sit on the plastic perch and they will last for ages, they only cost a few pence each and if you break another perch, just add another cable tie! - we have a couple of old feeders that have four cable ties on them now, having replaced all of the perches and the birds are quite happy using the feeders.
