It is an age old problem, we all want to see the small colourful birds in our gardens and we know the larger birds will keep the smaller birds away from the feeders if we don't do something to stop them. But I find it a problem to feed only the small garden birds and fend off the Pigeons and Magpies etc. After all they are all wild birds and at times of the year they all need extra energy to make their nests and rear their offspring.
We have found a good solution to this problem is to put out some large bird food on a separate ground feeder tray away from the wild bird feeding station, thus giving the larger birds their own feeding station and you can then also feed them a large bird mix, which (not surprisingly!) has larger seeds in it and so satisfies the big birds appetite quicker. Our large bird food is cheaper than most other bird foods and so you can save money as well as feeding the larger and small birds at the same time in the same garden - win, win!
