Here in Shropshire we tend to be a little behind some of the country, we are only just seeing flowering Daffodils and they had them in Cornwall before Christmas this year. But I have to say I can't remember a season so out of kilter as this years Winter. As the last week of December disappears and we head into the New Year, lots of little changes are about us that we take for granted in the Spring time.
Our garden Blackbirds have been a scarce commodity this year, and we thought they might have migrated south in view of the predicted coldest Winter for 50 years (according to BBC predictions based on the El Nino weather pattern). But only the other day we saw three Blackbirds in the garden, two males scrapping for the attention of one female, it was a lovely sight and lasted quite some minutes, we don't usually see this wild bird behavior until mid January. Today (30th December 2015) we saw flowering Daffodils in the south of the county, and ours are a good three to six inches higher than usual.
A lot of people have not fed their wild garden birds this year as it has been so mild, but really we think they should be fed all year round and we feed our songbirds with our own exclusive Blackbird and Thrush food, it contains wild berries, suet pellets, Apple, Raisins, granulated peanuts and lots of other tasty ingredients for your garden wild birds and small mammals to enjoy, whatever the time of year and weather.
