Winter is a very difficult time for birds, food is scarce and often difficult to find. There are no insects flying around nor juicy berries to snack on, and seeds and nuts are hidden under leaves or a thick layer of snow. To make things even more difficult, the hours of daylight are shorter, leaving our feathery friends little time to find the food they need to survive.
Some birds start saving nuts and seeds in the summer, some hunt sleepy insects in the cavities of a tree. The truth is though, that they still need help to make it through the winter. Feeding birds in the garden is a very popular and affordable activity. Birds will be happy to feast over your leftovers, be it an old apple or a stale piece of bread you had forgotten about.
Check out this simple activity from Sainsbury’s Bank to build a simple and practical bottle bird feeder. You don’t need a big garden to do your bit for wildlife, the bird feeder is great to use even in the urban areas.
