Autumn is an ideal opportunity to get the bird feeding station down and give it all a good clean.While we still have some sunshine in the day time the bird feeders, water trays and peanut feeders will all dry nicely and be ready to fill again at the end of the day.
A good idea is to leave the ground feeding tray well stocked and the small birds will go to that for the few hours the bird feeding station is down.
Cleaning your bird feeders is essential to maintain good health for your garden birds, diseases like Tricomonosis and other viral diseases can spread through old food and mouldy feeders. Take the feeders off the bird feeding station and empty out all of the seed, if it is fresh then save it to be put back in after cleaning, if it is old or damp or mouldy them dispose of it in the waste recycling bin (avoiding throwing it on the garden and attracting rodents). Take the feeders and you can either put them in a bowl of soapy water and leave them to soak, or you can use a good bird feeder brush and scrub the inside of the tube ensuring all of the dust is removed. After they have been brushed / soaked, treat them with a spray of Ark klense inside and out and wash them with clean fresh water until thoroughly clean. Leave to dry in the sun and fill / re-hang when thoroughly dry.
If you have a problem with mold, which could be due to damp conditions or time of year, or that the birds don't eat so much from a certain feeder. Then you can put a little Feeder Fresh in the bottom of the bird feeder first, then add the seed. The Feeder Fresh will stay at the bottom of the bird feeder and prevent any damp build up. It is perfectly harmless to birds and will last a few weeks depending on conditions.
If you have a ground feeding tray or bird table, then try Tamodine-E, this is for more difficult and stubborn stains and debris, you can apply it diluted and it is harmless to birds, but if you apply it neat, then you need to ensure the bird table or tray is washed and rinsed thoroughly. Tamodine is toxic to fish so don't use it in or close to ponds. Once again when you have finished cleaning the tray, rinse it off and let it dry before feeding the birds from it again.
