First fledglings appear in garden

Blackbird chicks in garden now.

It was lovely to see our first Blackbird fledgling in the garden on Monday 20th April. I am sure this is not particularly early, but it is our first sighting this year and so is special to us. A small grey furry ball with long legs and a yellow mouth, standing in the middle of the yard waiting for mum or dad to fly in and feed it. Left alone the young bird found a way through to the grass area for better cover and stood and chirped for help. Father Blackbird duly flew in and found some food to give to the chick, then flew off again, no doubt to either tend to more fledglings, or to return to the nest to feed the remaining nest bound brood. If you are planning a busy week end in the garden, spare a thought for your wild birds and their families, they will need a lot of care and attention from their parents and this is often the time of year when the young fledglings can end up in danger, because us humans interfere with their system, don't approach the bird, or it's parent will not tend to it, instead, keep a safe distance and sit and watch the goings on. This way you can act as protector, keeping the cats and other predators away for your young wild birds. If you are thinking about some pruning in the garden avoid the hedges as they will already contain nests, I am afraid it is September before the hedges should be cut now, so if you haven't got that job done, just watch it grow is all you can do. You can still prune bushes and small trees such as Forsythia, just  have a good look into the foliage before setting about the pruning to make sure there is no nests in there. We recommend all year round feeding and if you are continuing to feed your garden birds throughout the summer, then our exclusive Spring / Summer bird food mix is perfect to see your garden birds through the busy breeding season.
