Fattening up the hedgehogs now

Hedgehog food and habitats are welcome

Even in August, we should start to consider the needs of our garden wildlife and there are several things we can do in preparation for the Winter months and how to help our wildlife through the Winter.

Hedgehogs in particular are in steep decline, through the use of chemicals on farmland and continued depletion of habitats – how can we help the Hedgehogs?

We can give them a supply of fresh food and water – this does not cost much, our Hedgehog food is designed with all the balanced nutrition they need to gain weight and get ready for the Winter. Next we might like to provide a shelter, the Hedgehog in our garden at the moment is a nomad, we can’t find his home, but we don’t need to look too hard, he always comes each night for his food and water, then dissapears, so he must have a home somewhere close by. British  Bird Food have several Hedgehog homes to consider.

Hedgehogs need to weigh at least 500g in order to sustain hibernation over Winter, so that is why we should be feeding them now. If we leave it until the colder months then we have left it too late to help them survive naturally. This is when you need to be observant in your garden wildlife, if you see a Hedgehog in late Autumn or early Winter and he looks small and weak, then try and trap it (small animal trap is ideal) and you can weigh it and seek advice from the RSPCA or your local Hedgehog sanctuary. If they say he is too small to survive on his own, then the best thing is to take him to one of those organisations and they will over Winter him and release him in the Spring.
